Gather Ingredients flour cocoa sugar milk + lemon juice pumpkin puree apple sauce

Step 1: Add lemon juice to milk to create buttermilk. Add wet ingredients to a mixing bowl.  Add the flour/cocoa mixture, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Step 2: Combine the dry and wet mixtures, and mix until combined, but don't overmix.

Step 3: Pour the batter evenly into prepared cake pans - rubbed with butter or coconut oil and dusted with cocoa powder.

Step 4:  Bake 2 layers for 25-30 minutes at 350 F. Remove when a test is clean.
