Recipe Variations
Strawberry Watermelon Water. Instead of lemon, add ¼ cup of chunked watermelon.
Strawberry Basil Water. Instead of mint, add 3 basil leaves.
Strawberry Cucumber Water. Instead of lemons, add ¼ cup slice English cucumber, not peeled.
Strawberry Ginger Water. Instead of mint leaves, add 1-inch of chopped fresh ginger root, peeled. Put the chopped ginger through a garlic press if possible to turn it into a pulp for a stronger flavor.
Strawberry Infused Water with Frozen Fruit. Fresh is always best but if you only have frozen fruits, you can still make infused water. Just let the fruits thaw in the refrigerator, and muddle them when you add them to the water to release more flavor. That means press them against the jar with the back of a spoon to squash them.
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the strawberries and lemons. Scrub the strawberries gently to remove any dirt. Cut off any blemishes. Cut out the green hull or stem. Slice the strawberries into slices or quarters. Wash lemons well with soap and water, rinse and slice. Then cut off the peel, including the white pith.
Step 2: Add the ingredients to a glass or 16 ounce jar. And add water.
Step 3: Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes for some benefits, and 4 hours or more for full benefits and pink color.
Step 4: Enjoy the drink within 24 hours or pour into ice cube trays and freeze to be thawed later to drink. You can eat the fruit within that 24 hours and up until it becomes too soggy to enjoy.
Storage
Refrigerate. You can leave the strawberry and lemon water with fruit in the jar in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. After that, remove the fruit so it doesn't decompose in your water. Strawberry lemon water without fruit can remain fresh in the refrigerator for 5 days.
Freeze. Pour the strawberry lemon water, minus the fruit, into ice cube trays to preserve the drink long term. Once the ice cubes are frozen, store them in freezer containers for up to 6 months. To thaw, place a few cubes in a glass in the refrigerator overnight, and you'll have strawberry water ready to drink in the morning.
Expert Tips
For best flavor and most pure water, choose organic fruits. Strawberries especially need to be organic because they are high on the list of fruits that tend to soak up pesticides. [source]
For a faster color and flavor infusion of your strawberry detox water, muddle or squash the fruits in the water with a spoon, pressing them against the sides of the jar. Also tear and rub the mint leaves before putting them in the water.
You will get some nutritional benefit from the water after it infuses for 30 minutes, but you'll get much more flavor and benefits if you infuse for at least 2 hours, and more so after 6 to 8 hours.
Refill the jar with fresh water three times within 24 hours if you finish the water and want to make more.
Remove the fruit after 24 hours so it doesn't decompose and ruin the flavor of your water.
Don't add sugar or you'll turn this ultra healthy water into a sweetened juice. If you prefer a sweeter drink, try my watermelon juice. It also has no sugar, but watermelon is naturally high in sugar.
