How Many Ounces in a Teaspoon?

The answer is there are 1.7 fluid ounces in 1 teaspoon.

There are few tools that can measure out 1.7 ounces so you most certainly would use a teaspoon to measure this amount. Still, as the number of ounces multiplies you might be able to use a glass measuring cup to measure out ounces. So if you have a recipe that calls for 17 ounces of a liquid, but you only have a teaspoon to measure with, you would add 10 teaspoons to the recipe.

Even if this measurement conversion is a little obscure, it is a good opportunity to investigate ounces and teaspoons.

    What is an Ounce?

As I've noted in other conversion articles, an ounce is a popular measurement unit especially for liquids. It is abbreviated as "oz" and is used to measure amounts that are small. There are two types of ounces, fluid ounces and dry ounces. When liquids are measured, we employ fluid ounces labeled as "fl oz". The Romans called it "uncia" which means one-twelfth. The ounce can also be used for dry ingredients, though the final value may change since dry ingredients do not take all the space in a measuring tool.

    What is a Teaspoon?

A teaspoon has a long history in the world of food. It was create back in the 17th century and literally used only to stir tea. It's capacity at that time was about the same as the modern-day teaspoon. Now, while a teaspoon is still used at the dinner table to stir drinks, it is an important culinary tool as well.

A teaspoon is used to measure both wet and dry ingredients. It is important to note it is not used in the metric system but measures 5 milliliters. The teaspoon in the US customary system is often abbreviated tsp, tsps or t.

To measure with a teaspoon isn't hard. You would fill the spoon. Level off the top with a blunt knife, and that would leave you with an accurate amount of ingredient.

Dry vs Wet teaspoon to Oz

Remember, that 1 teaspoon equals 1.7 fluid ounces, and 6 teaspoons equal 1 ounce. But there is such thing as dry ounces too. They are used to measure flour, sugar and other dry ingredients.

Teaspoons also show a difference regarding wet and dry ingredients. To get a precise measurement difference between say a teaspoon of milk (wet) and a teaspoon of dried basil (dry) it would be best to weigh them. One teaspoon of milk would be 0.16 ounces, and 1 teaspoon of dried basil would be 0.7 grams.

The Ounce & The Metric System

Up until now I am addressing information embraced by the US customary system used in the United States. The rest of the world uses the metric system, and the metric system does not use the ounce. But it might be helpful to note that a fluid ounce in the metric system is equal to 29.57 milliliters, and a dry ounce is 28.35 grams.

How to Convert Teaspoons to Ounces

How many teaspoons equals 1 oz? Since 1 fluid ounce is equivalent to approximately 6 teaspoons, that means if you have 6 teaspoons, you would have approximately 1 ounce of liquid.

Since one fluid ounce equals 6 teaspoons, use this conversion to convert teaspoons to ounces by simply dividing the number of teaspoons by 6:

    # teaspoon ÷ 6 = # ounces

For instance, to find the number of ounces in 3 teaspoons, use this equation:

    3 teaspoons ÷ 6 = 0.5 ounces. So the answer is 3 teaspoons equal ½ ounce.

    ½ Ounce = 3 Teaspoons
    1 Ounces = 6 Teaspoons
    2 Ounces = 12 Teaspoons
    3 Ounces = 18 Teaspoons
    4 Ounces = 24 Teaspoons
    5 Ounces = 30 Teaspoons

This chart provides a comparison of common dry ingredients in both ounces and teaspoons. As with most dry ingredients, weighing with a digital scale is best for exact measurements. That's because the exact amount may vary depending on factors like the density.

How to Measure Ounces & Teaspoons

When measuring for ounces or teaspoons, use the proper tools.

When a recipe refers to a liquid ingredient in ounces, it’s referring to fluid ounces and should be measured in a glass liquid measuring cup. When a dry ingredient is listed in ounces or if you want to measure your ingredient with grams using the metric system, you’ll need to use a digital kitchen scale.

To measure fluid ounces using the glass cup, be sure the ounce markings are clear. Pour in the liquid and eyeball that the liquid meets the proper ounce line, noting that the center dip of the meniscus hits the line.

To measure ounces using the scale, set a container on the scale and tap the button so the scale is set to zero with the container's weight zero-ed out. Then add the ingredient amount and note the measurement in ounces.

To measure teaspoons, use metal measuring spoons for either dry or wet ingredients. Scoop the amount you need into the spoon or pour if it is a liquid. For dry ingredients, level off with the blunt side of a knife.

If you want to overfill a teaspoon, that is allowed if the recipe calls for it to be a "heaping" teaspoon.
