pouring black forest and chocolate cherry smoothie.

A chocolate cherry smoothie, or black forest smoothie, that is low in calories, filling and deliciously rich with a deep chocolate flavor. This smoothie is perfect for watching your weight. Dairy free, gluten free and refined sugar free.

pouring black forest and chocolate cherry smoothie.

This chocolate cherry smoothie tastes like a slice of black forest cake, and the best part is it is so full of healthy fats and fiber that it fits perfectly into your diet if you are working to lose weight.

This decadent chocolate cherry protein smoothie is relatively low in calories yet helps you fill full several hours after eating. That's partly because of the 15 grams of protein and 9 grams of fiber. Filled with nourishing foods like rolled oats and dates, like my chocolate beet smoothie, and my chocolate peanut butter smoothie, this chocolate cherry milkshake is a great way to support your weight loss plan.

    Ingredients Needed

ingredients for black forest and chocolate cherry smoothie.
    • Milk - Use your favorite, but low fat is best for a weight loss plan.
    • Cauliflower.  - Frozen riced cauliflower is high in fiber, nutrition and thickens.
    • Rolled oats. Rolled oats are high in fiber and help you watch your weight by helping you feel full longer.
    • Cocoa - I used unsweetened powdered cocoa.
    • Dates or Maple syrup - Medjool dates will make your smoothie taste the best, but they are not always convenient, so maple syrup works too.
    • Cherries - I used frozen. Fresh are less sweet so use twice as much if using fresh.

See the recipe card at the bottom for full information on ingredients and quantities.

How to Make Chocolate Cherry Smoothie

For more detail, visit the complete and printable recipe at the bottom of this post, but here are general steps.

Prepare: Soak dates if using in a cup of just boiled water for 5 minutes. Rinse oats to remove dusty coating. Just add to a strainer and pour a cup of filtered water over them. This removes some phytates which can be hard to digest.

wash rolled oats for a smoothie.

Step 1: Add ingredients to a blender.

single serve brownie with almond flour in a mug batter.

Step 2: Blend slowly at first, then faster for about one minute.

Tip: Taste your smoothie and if you need it to be sweeter, add another date or 1-2 tablespoon of maple syrup.

    Recipe Tips

Use frozen cauliflower and frozen cherries to make your smoothie cold and thick.

You can boost the nutrition and healthy fats by adding 2 tablespoon chia seeds and ½ avocado. These two ingredients will also boost the calorie count however.

To boost nutrition without increasing calories, add ½ cup of raw spinach - ½ cup of packed raw spinach leaves won't be tasted and will add potassium.

Flavor enhancing tip: Add a teaspoon of Ceylon cinnamon to enhance the chocolate flavor, and help balance blood sugar.

    Storage

Keep your black forest smoothie refrigerated for 24 hours or freeze in an ice cube tray for long term. When you ready to drink it, blend the cubes with a bit of milk.

    FAQS

Does a black forest smoothie contain cake?

Not my black forest smoothie recipe. The health ingredients include cocoa, cherries, and cauliflower as well as other nourishing ingredients.

Why is this smoothie called black forest?

This is a black forest smoothie because it features the flavors found in the black forest cake which are chocolate and cherries.
