overnight oats with frozen berries in a jar

Overnight oats with frozen fruit are a creamy cool breakfast, perfect for a hot day. Using frozen fruits in overnight oats is ideal because the frozen fruits thaw and make an ice-cream-sundae-like sauce in your oats.

If you aren't familiar with overnight oats, they are a thick and creamy oatmeal made by soaking oats in milk overnight. They are the perfect grab and go breakfast made even more convenient when using frozen fruit as a mix in. Fresh berries are delicious, but it's nice to know you can make overnight oats with frozen fruit anytime with frozen berries ready and waiting in the freezer.

    Why You'll Love These

Easy to make ahead. Overnight oats with frozen fruit are easy to make ahead. You can make up to 5 portions to cover Monday through Friday, though they can get rubbery after the 3rd day so I suggest only making 3 days of overnight oats in advance and letting them wait for you in the refrigerator.

Healthy & nutritious. Because frozen fruit is frozen quickly it retains nutritional value and can be more nutritionally fresh than unfrozen fruit. In addition, overnight oats are full of fiber and help you feel full for hours and avoid unhealthy snacking.

Vegan, gluten free and dairy free. This easy frozen berry oats recipe is vegan, dairy free, gluten free and refined sugar free provided you use dairy free milk and yogurt.

    Ingredients

ingredients for frozen fruit overnight oats

    1. Rolled oats: Use old fashioned rolled oats. Quick oats can work, but steel cut oats do not work for overnight oats because they require cooking.

    2. Dairy free milk: Choose your favorite milk.

    3. Chia seeds: Chia seeds are a nutritious addition, but optional.

    4. Yogurt: Yogurt is also optional, but it adds a creamy flavor and more protein.

    5. Lemon juice: Add a little lemon juice because it deactivate phytates in oats that sometimes interfere with digestion.

    6. Maple syrup: Or choose your favorite liquid sweetener such as agave, date paste or date syrup.

7: Frozen fruit. I used frozen mixed berries but any frozen fruit can work.

    Equipment Needed

    • Measuring cups, spoons
    • Oats container with a cover

Step 2: Add all basic overnight oats ingredients (no frozen fruit yet) to a container and stir with a spoon to break up clumps.

Step 3: Chill the oats covered for at least 2 hours or overnight.

Step 4: The next day, or when you intend to eat the oats, Add a layer of frozen fruit to a jar, add a layer of chilled oats, and top off with more frozen fruit. As the frozen fruits thaw to create a fruity berry ribbons of sauce within your oats. Then enjoy!

    Variations

Without chia seeds and yogurt. Overnight oats can be made without chia seeds and yogurt. They both add creaminess to the texture.

Other additions. Add crushed walnuts, ground flax seeds and hemp seeds, all for additional crunch and protein.

Overnight oats chocolate top. For a decadent spin on these frozen fruit overnight oats, melt ¼ cup of chocolate chips in the microwave at 30 seconds, and pour the melted chocolate on top of the prepared chocolate chip overnight oats, either before or after chilling. The melted chocolate will take a few minutes to set in the refrigerator, then break it with a spoon and enjoy!

adding overnight oats to frozen fruit

    How to Store

Refrigerated. Overnight oats with frozen fruit can last 2 days covered and in the refrigerator.

Make Ahead. It's easy to make ahead two days of breakfasts to be ready to grab and go. You can chill it in a covered jar like a mason jar, or these overnight oats jars, and bring it to work or school. Don't eat overnight oats that have been left at room temperature for more than two hours.

Freeze. Technically prepared overnight oats can be frozen and thawed, but since it takes the same amount of time to make them fresh and chill, it's better if possible to just make them fresh.

    FAQS

Can you use frozen fruit in overnight oats?

It is ideal to add frozen fruit to overnight oats because frozen fruit will stay fresh longer and become less soggy than fresh fruit through the overnight soaking process. In addition, thawed frozen fruits create a fruity sauce within your oats similar to a topping on an ice cream sundae.

Can you put frozen fruit in the fridge overnight?

Yes, frozen fruit can stay good for up to two days after it is thawed. That means the overnight oats that are make ahead can be eaten three days after prepared provided it stays chilled in the refrigerator.

    Notes

    1. Seal the container well so the oats don't dry out while chilling.
    2. Taste-test the oats. Once you've mixed the basic oats recipe, taste the oats to be sure they are sweet enough for you and if not, add a bit more sweetener.
    3. Enhance the flavor by adding ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract and ⅛ teaspoon of salt. If you like cinnamon, add ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon.
    4. Overnight oats need to be chilled at least 2 hours, although they will be creamier chilled over night.
