    Ginger Juice

A homemade ginger juice recipe producing a refreshing healing drink that calms tummy upset, boosts immunity, improves digestion and can be used as a base for healthy and holiday drinks. Easy to make in a juicer or blender.

    Ginger Juice

Ginger Juice, juice from pureed fresh ginger root, has a refreshing bite and carries a load of nutrition. The simple juice will fix an upset tummy, relieve bloating, beat cold germs, help you control weight and more.

It is, of course, the main component of many healthy wellness shots, including my own Ginger Shots. But it can also be added to more complex recipes to boost health benefits and add spicy flavor.

    Ginger Juice

    Why You'd Love This

A party in your mouth. Ginger juice is tangy and zingy to the taste-buds, and actually warms your tongue and even your hand through the glass thanks to active compounds in ginger called gingerols that trigger heat-sensing nerve cells in your mouth and hands. [source]

Versatile juice. Use ginger juice in your salads, flavor a stir fry, make wellness shots or turmeric shots, or use as a base for alcohol cocktails or mocktail drinks, or add a few tablespoons to a glass of seltzer water and you have the healthiest form of Ginger-ale ever made.

    Ingredients

Ginger. Use fresh ginger root root. Scrub with a brush or cloth as you would a potato, and you don't need to peel, but if you want to, use the upside down edge of a spoon to scrape away the skin.

    Water.

    Ginger Juice

    Steps to Make

Simple to make! Just wash, blend and strain. You can use a juicer if you own one, but a blender is just fine. Exact measurements are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post, but here are general steps.

    1. Buy fresh ginger root. It's a tan gnarly root found in the root/potato/onion area of your grocery store's produce section.

    2. Wash your root with water. If you have a brush, use it to get off any muddy spots. I also trim away dirty areas.

    3. Do you have to peel? No, because you will be filtering the chopped root, but if you want to, use a small spoon to scrap off skin.

    4. Chop up the root into pieces to help your blender (or juicer) and process. I use a ratio of 2 cups of chopped ginger root with 1 cup of water.

    5. Pour the blended mixture through a fine strainer and push to dry the pulp with a rubber spatula.

    6. The resulting liquid is your Ginger Juice. Refrigerate.

    Food Waste Tip

Want to save the pulp? Dry it in an oven at 150 F for 3 hours and blend or process into ginger powder, the same ground spice you buy at the grocery store.

    How to Use It

To reap any of the benefits listed, drink ginger juice straight or drink a glass of water with a few spoonfuls of ginger juice stirred right in.

    • Make a seltzer by adding a few spoonfuls of ginger juice to seltzer water and enjoy a fresh and healthy homemade Ginger-ale.
    • Ginger Beer can be made by adding a teaspoon of maple syrup to your seltzer and ginger juice to make Ginger Beer!!
    • Ginger Tea is easy to make - just add a few tablespoonfuls of ginger juice to make a Ginger Tea brew.

Or add it to recipes, soups, juices, smoothies, ice cream, cocktails, salad dressings and more.

    7 Health Benefits

Ginger juice fixes so many problems, it's just silly. And it's health benefits date back deep into history. I mean deep, as in 456 BC Confucius time. [source]

Today, it is still well known that ginger is a go-to for upset stomachs and immunity boosting. But today's science shows fresh ginger juice really supports so much more. Read my list of benefits of ginger juice below.

    1. Lose Weight, Control Appetite. Drink a few spoonfuls of ginger juice stirred into water before each meal and you won't eat as much. It especially controls urges for sweets as the gingerol stimulates the sweet taste buds in your mouth, tricking them into thinking they have been satisfied.

    2. Fights Colds & Viruses. Drink ginger juice stirred into a simple glass of water 3 times a day to shorten that cold duration or better, fight off one you've been exposed to. Science doesn't know exactly why ginger is so potent a germ fighter but thinks it has to do with its active components called gingerols. [source]

    3. Fixes Stomach Aches & Eases Digestion. Ginger juice has components that sooth an upset stomach and that stimulate the breakdown of food in your mouth to boost digestion before food even reaches your stomach. Drink half a cup of water with a spoonful of ginger juice stirred in before each meal. [source]

    4. Relieves Pain of Migraines, Arthritis & Aches. Ginger water has anti-inflammatory properties that also acts as a pain reliever. You can drink the ginger water straight, a few tablespoons, or mixed in water, or even rub into a particular muscle or your temples for the pain-relieving effects. [source]

    5. Controls High Blood Pressure. Many health articles and health experts would claim how a certain chemical compound in ginger helps reduce hypertension. It also helps lower the bad cholesterol in your body which causes heart disease. [source]

    6. Controls Blood Sugar Levels. Ginger is known to reduce blood sugar in a healthy way. Drinking ginger juice helps keep it steady significantly. [source]

    7. Disease-blocking Antioxidant & Anti-Inflammatory. Inflammation can be triggered by chemicals, diet and atmospheric condition but ginger juice can fight its harm. Also antioxidant properties in ginger are powerful opponents of heart disease, cancer and symptoms of aging. [source]

    FAQS

Whether you are drinking ginger juice, or making energy ginger shots, or using ginger in a recipe, there is a lot of nutrition in this tiny root. Here are some facts about ginger.

How Much Ginger Juice Should I Drink?

In general, try not to drink more than 4-5 tablespoon of ginger juice a day, either mixed in water or not. That will keep you well within the levels of ginger consumption experts recommend. [source]

How Long Does This Juice Last

Refrigerated ginger juice lasts about two weeks in a sealed jar. To save it longer, freeze it in ice cube trays.

Do You Have To Peel Ginger Root?

Nope, but I do suggest you buy organic since we won't be cooking this root. Also, I would suggest you wash very well, as you would potatoes since ginger is a root grown in dirt.

If you do decide to peel, use a small spoon, held upside down and scrap. A spoon helps you get into the nooks and crannies of the root.

    Equipment

    • 1 Fine Mesh Strainer
Prevent your screen from going dark

    Instructions

    Make Ginger Juice

    • Wash the ginger root.
      2 cups ginger root
    • If you want to peel, use a small spoon.
    • Chop roughly
    • Add to a blender, along with the water. Or of course use a juicer if you own one.
1 cup water, 2 cups ginger root
    • Process for 1-2 minutes until you have a pulpy mixture.
    • Push the mixture through a strainer. The dryer you can make it, the more ginger juice you'll extract.
    • Refrigerate the liquid, that is your ginger juice.

Use Pulp to Make Ground Ginger

    • You can throw out the pulp, but if you want to use it, spread it in a pan and bake it at 150 F for three hours in the oven. You are dehydrating it. Or of course use a dehydrater if you have one.
    • Grind the dried ginger pulp in a blender or food processor. This is ginger powder, the same as the ground ginger powder spice you buy at the grocery store.
